Backing it In

What do you get when you mix dirt bikes, slick tires, a go-cart track and crazed leather-clad motorcyclists? Supermotard racing (some call it super moto).

Last weekend Ride Oklahoma Magazine was invited to watch the Oklahoma Superbikers practice and race at JRP Speedway in Tulsa. My son Adam made some hot laps on a KTM 520. When he came back in from the ride he had a HUGE grin on his face. Said it was the most fun he had experienced on a motorcycle in quite some time! The action is fast and intense, but the riding is safe - as far as motorcycle racing goes. Rarely do speeds top 60 mph and the track is clear of obstacles, sand, and automobiles.

Supermotard racing is probably one of the most affordable types of motorracing on the planet. After talking to many riders, it was clear you could get involved on a competitive bike for under $2,000. Even a top of the line KTM is under $10,000. To get started, attend a race, ask around about the required equipment, get some leathers and come on out to the races.
